Opposable Thumbs, the gaming folks over at Ars Technica that we often ‘borrow’ from (hey, we link to them and give them credit each time at least) just ran a post about a new charity setting up shop in the great big internet. It’s called DonateGames.org, and while it isn’t doing business yet on the ‘selling’ side of things, they are already accepting donations as to get the ball rolling.
The idea is pretty simple. Instead of going to GameStop or somewhere similar to trade in your used games for that copy of Onechanbara you’ve been hoping to get your paws on, you mail your game off to DonateGames.org. In return, they will give you a tax deductible receipt, which is great for keeping Uncle Sam off your back a bit. But you receive no ducats.
Instead, DonateGames.org will sell that used game, and with the ducats raised by doing so, they intend to provide some funding for research and treatment options for dealing with the far lesser-known diseases (such as bonitis) that like to creep up on our friends, families, and fair-weather well-wishers when we all least expect it. Whew. Long sentence. Anyhow, it’s a noble, if not quite ‘thuggish’ enterprise, and it may very well be a way to start atoning for that hobo you ran down with your car last year. Oh yes. I know about that. I know all about that…..
